‘To be included among people’: families’ perceptions of schooling and contingent negotiations in a rural Tibetan community in China

State schooling is currently transforming Tibetans’ perceptions and everyday experiences in Western China. Based on interviews with rural Tibetan parents grandparents, using subjectification as an analytical concept, this paper argues that schooling, alongside socio-economic changes, powerfully shapes the subjectivities of grandparents. Against their own sense exclusion, they justified support recourse to promises state for children ‘be included among people’ through social mobility. Set context School Consolidation Policy(SCP), study illustrates ‘double directionality’ process where participants were made into well becoming certain kinds subjects navigations arena. Trivialising SCP’s challenging implications, supported perceived better quality education under SCP. Meanwhile, making contingent negotiations ensure learn culture language.
